About ME

Hi! My name is Alexis and I'm a girl scout in Troop #2701. I am currently a junior in high school located in California. This website is dedicated to my Gold Award, which is the highest award I can achieve as a Girl Scout. This project aims to conquer an issue I'm passionate about throughout my neighborhood to the entire world. I chose this topic especially after hearing about the inequality many women face, due to either traditional ideals or the plainly unable to gain access to such education. This project is generated to have an everlasting effect which is why this website was created.

Organization: Friendship Bridge

For my project, I have collaborated with an organization called Friendship Bridge. This organization is based in Lakewood, Colorado and their objective is to empower women in Guatemala, they help acquire microloans for these women to either expand a business or reach a higher education, generally just a better life. I've specifially worked with Nicole Eubanks (Project Advisor): Chief Development Officer and Nancy Hiester (Helper) : Development Manager

Root Cause

Many parts of the country have enforced laws to combat gender inequity in education.

  •  1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)- a treaty that requires countries to eliminate discrimination against women and girls in all areas and promotes womens’ and girls’ equal rights

  • The UNESCO’s Convention Against Discrimination in Education (CADE) is a multilateral treaty which aims to combat discrimination (including any distinction/exclusion based on race, color, language, gender, etc.) in the field of education.

Although this is a huge world problem without a definite solution, I hope to shine a light on this situation to those near me (as it’s not talked about as much as we think it is.)

Many underdeveloped countries are unable to reach proper schooling due to their life in poverty and the government has to lack of ability in funding programs to provide education. Some countries have traditional beliefs therefore, women are unable to get an education. Overall this projects seeks the message that "everyone should be able to receive equal opportunity."
